The Fate of the X-Men

The Fate of the X-Men

Can we talk about the latest (and I’m assuming the final) trailer for Dark Phoenix? If you haven’t seen it, here it is:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-q8C_c-nlMI’ve explained on FGC Podcast with Josh multiple times that X-Men was my favorite comic growing up, so you could imagine my surprise when 1999 came around and word had dropped that my favorite team was getting their own live action movie, plus it was being directed by Bryan Singer (who was my favorite director at the time for the movies Apt Pupil and The Usual Suspects). I’d like to mention this was at a time where Spider-Man movies were non-existent and a gleam in the eye of comic fans everywhere. We all wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play Peter Parker then. The trailer dropped and the movie came and went.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbNcULQFojcI’ll be honest. I said I liked it. Loved it even. It got most things right. 4T said it wasn’t really an X-Men movie. It was really Wolverine and friends and he wasn’t wrong in that statement. Where I was a vocal supporter, I really wanted more. X-Men 2 came out in the year 2003 and to this day, I have nothing but love for that movie.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mu-vLOARgUIt’s a solid story with a cast a great actors, action coupled with better effects, stellar ending. This movie would be my favorite until 2012 when Avengers is released. That’s several years of me scratching my head asking what the heck is happening to the X-Men franchise.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyAg2gu6z0IThe follow up of X-Men 2 was X-Men 3 in 2006. This is where things start to get weird… for me. Bryan Singer departs and enter Brett Ratner. I was concerned as a fan but I realize now that 20th Century Fox would begin to play with my emotions. I never forgave Bryan Singer for ruining two movies in one fell swoop. He left X-Men 3 to do Superman Returns and that one never really stuck the landing for me. I’m aware what people have said. Superman Returns is remake of the first Superman in the late 70s. X-Men 3 was a mess. It’s always hard for a film that loses a director during production. Just look at film like The Hobbit. X-Men 3 had multiple stories that were needlessly interwoven and that was the end of that cast… or so I thought. The following films were released: X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, X-Men First Class in 2011, The Wolverine in 2013, X-Men Days of Future Past in 2014, Deadpool in 2016, X-Men Apocalypse also in 2016, Logan in 2017 and Deadpool 2 in 2018. Out of the remaining 8 films that were released. 3 of them were good in my view and that’s when Wolverine said goodbye in Logan and Wade Wilson whined about Hugh Jackman not being in his movies Deadpool 1 and 2.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QojV7s3UTu0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrbHykKUfTMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toLpchTUYk8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK2zYHWDZKohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONHBaC-pfskhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COvnHv42T-Ahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Div0iP65aZo&t=5shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D86RtevtfrANow understand, the others weren’t train wrecks, I just prefer the books over the movies. Which brings me to Dark Phoenix. I can’t even begin to explain how I feel about this movie because the sum of the trailers for Dark Phoenix has accomplished something that I didn’t think would be possible. On the enthusiasm scale of 1 - 100, Dark Phoenix has squeezed itself right in the center of that scale. I neither long for or loathe the idea of seeing this movie. That’s an impressive feat and I don’t know how to feel about that either.I used to look forward to these movies. I went back and thought, ‘maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m getting older and these movies just don’t do it for me.’ Then I look my favorite sites and remember that Captain Marvel, Avengers and Spider-Man are coming out in the span of six months and that makes me excited. So what is it about this movie that makes me feel this way. Perhaps it’s the fact that 20th Century Fox is getting absorbed into Disney and I feel this movie is inconsequential. Perhaps I feel like there’s going to be no real satisfying ending to this very strange franchise that brought me both joy and dissatisfaction. The credits will roll and it won’t mean anything. Didn’t they (Fox) prep for this? Maybe they haven’t marketed it properly. If I feel this way for Dark Phoenix, I can only imagine the fate of New Mutants.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu9e410C__IFriendly reminder: this is a real trailer for a real movie. I was confused because the New Mutants books I remember reading wasn't horror based, but what do I know. You could add a new spin on things. This trailer was released in 2017 for a release date for April 13, 2018. They now say it's supposed to be released in August 2019.Maybe I’ll see this movie. A part of me feels like the new X-Men cast consisting of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Peters needs a proper send off. The trailer hints at a death because of several scenes shown at a funeral. If the person who I think dies, that further changes the continuity of all the films and I’ve bared witness to how these movies treat continuity… very carelessly.I could be wrong. I typically reserve judgement until I see and experience the movie, but at this current moment in time, I remain skeptical.
